[3.3.x] Support Forum • How to wrap a phpbb forum in to a wordpress site

This is something I have been looking for a solution to for some time through searching on these forums as well as on wordpress support sites.
I have a phpbb form running version 3.3.11. Using Flat style.
The aim is for it to have the same header and footer as the main site on the phpbb forum so that it presents as being fully integrated in to the responsive site.
The options are to add the header and footer from the wordpress site to the phpbb code or to integrate the phpbb forum in to a page in the wordpress site.

I gather that there have been some old wordpress plugins which offered a solution but these are no longer supported.

The forum is installed in https://mainsite.com/ and the forum is installed in a subdirectory https://mainsite.com/forum/
I had tried using an iframe with X-Frame-Options: SAMEORIGIN however my understanding is that as the forum is in another directory then it is not seen as being the same origin as the main domain.

I have been exploring a few other methods but seem to come unstuck.
Is there a clear comprehensive way to achieve this header and footer integration from a wordpress site in to a phpbb forum?
Hope that this makes sense. Many thanks for any assistance or insights.
