Honestly WordPress makes it look so easy. I recently updated my forums and took me a whole sunday. Mostly because I didnt disable the extensions and something broke. But was able to recover the forums and restore everything.
But the point is updating phpbb is a pain and would be amazing if we can get WordPress like feature to update.
